Ethnolects

Privacy notice

Just Gold Digital Agency Pty Ltd publishes Ethnolects and is responsible for the personal information collected through ethnolects.org, italglishproject.com and spanglishproject.com.

Words, names and offers of help

The forms on these sites let you send a word, propose a name for a dictionary, or offer to join the consultation as an editor, adviser or host. Depending on the form, we collect the word and its meaning, the English it came from, an example, where and in which decade you heard it, a note, your name, your email address, your organisation and the languages you speak. Only the fields marked as needed are required.

Contributors are published under the name they give and nothing else. Email addresses are never published. We use them only to ask about a word you sent, to reply to an offer of help, or to tell you what happened to your proposal.

Submissions are stored in a database run by Cloudflare and read by the editors at Just Gold. Just Gold's email and files are held in Microsoft 365. Both services may store or process information outside Australia.

To stop automated spam, each submission is stored with a scrambled code made from your internet address and a secret value. We cannot read your address from that code. We use it only to limit how many submissions one connection can send in a day, and it is kept with the submission until the submission is deleted.

Browsing the sites

The sites do not use advertising or tracking cookies and do not run analytics that follow you between sites. The page fonts load from Google Fonts, which receives your internet address when it sends them. The Italglish and Spanglish dictionaries remember your language and region choice in your own browser. That setting stays on your device and is not sent to us.

Community meetings and recordings

Word nights and recorded interviews will have their own written consent form. Before anything is recorded, we will explain what will be kept, who will hear it and how it may be published. Nothing recorded will be published without that consent.

Your choices

You can withdraw a word you contributed, ask to be credited differently, ask what information we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it. Email hello@justgold.net with "Privacy" in the subject line, or write to Just Gold, 3 Albert Coates Lane, Melbourne VIC 3000. We will explain any legal or practical limits that apply to a request.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au. Just Gold's wider privacy policy also applies.
